Like most manufacturers (Nintendo and its NES II, Atari and its VCS2600 Jr), Sega replaced the original SMS in 1989 with a more stripped-down, cheaper model: the SMS II. Smaller, very round, and appearing as an entry-level console compared to the high-end Megadrive, it does not at all offer the same "look & feel" and is very limited in terms of connectivity.
The design change includes:
The cartridge port flap is replaced by a pivoting housing, leaving the port exposed.
Also gone is the ROM boot-up sequence, with the sliding "Master System" logo and official music, which appears on power-up.
The power indicator LED has been removed.
The expansion slot at the back has been removed.
A redesign compared to its illustrious predecessor.
No more Reset button.
A large Pause button.
