The Laserdisc, a precursor to modern optical media, marked a crucial step in the evolution of home entertainment. Commercially launched in 1978, this innovative format offered superior image and sound quality compared to the videotapes of the time, making it the preferred choice of discerning cinephiles until the late 1990s.

Recognizable by its imposing 30 cm diameter silver disc, the Laserdisc was the first medium to use optical technology for video, paving the way for future CDs and DVDs. Despite its qualitative advantages, its distribution remained limited due to its high cost and bulkiness.
