In Dungeons and Dragons, a player takes on the role of the dungeon master and faces a team of adventurers, played by the other player(s). The adventurers play together and try to thwart the traps set by the guardian.
Largely inspired by Heroquest, D&D takes and simplifies the universe of the role-playing game: doors, monsters, and treasures!
Material:
The game material consists of modular boards, which, once assembled, form the different rooms of the dungeon, and decorative elements.
The dungeon master has a quest booklet and all the necessary material for the proper conduct of the scenarios (monster figurines, treasures, traps, etc.)
Players each choose an adventurer from the cleric, wizard, warrior, or thief. Each of these characters has characteristics and powers.
Game play:
The games are different depending on the scenario chosen by the players.
The objectives of the adventurers, the forces and objects available to the master will therefore vary depending on the quests proposed by the booklet.
The mechanisms, however, do not vary.
The players will move their characters from room to room, until they reach their goal (where often a "boss" awaits them). In the different rooms of the dungeon, the adventurers will have to disarm traps, recover treasures and fight enemies.
Actions are resolved using a D6 system.
Some characters are more skilled than others depending on the type of action. The warrior hits hard while the thief easily disarms traps. The cleric can heal and repel undead creatures and the wizard can use spells.
As they progress, the heroes will recover more or less special objects.
And how do you win?
If the dungeon master manages to exterminate the team of adventurers, he is the strongest, for sure!
If the team of adventurers completes the scenario, not only does it mean they are very strong (normal, they are the good guys after all), but they can also start a new scenario (where the villain will be even more villainous, for sure!)
